Dolce and Gabbana, fashion's dynamic duo. The designers of the present and future. D&G met while they were assistants in Milan. They became fast friends and eventually life partners.
In 1982 they started their first fashion consulting studio. The gentlemen believed in great lines and structure, but their line also provided the ammunition for sexy and stylish.
By the year 1985 Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana became "Dolce and Gabbana". They premiered their women's collection in Milan.
Their design appeal is based on sweet and sharp, angles and curves. They are easily recognizable by their versatility and glamour.
The concepts are almost over the top, but with enough restraint to make their designs acceptable. Dolce and Gabbana clothing are children's stories. There are many twists and turns, ups and downs, but always with a happy ending.
A D&G quote, "Designing is like a movie, think of a story and we design the clothes for it." Clothes connect the story with the characters, and bring fantasy to reality.
Domenico and Stefano design for the strong woman. A woman with confidence and self respect. People respond well to her.
She is world-wise, no matter where her roots. She looks ahead, knowing her past helped mold the woman she has become.
She can be a wife, mother, business woman, friend and lover, but she is first and foremost, a woman.
In 1993 D&G introduced footwear into their portfolio. This same year Madonna went on tour.
She had the boys design her costumes for her "Girlie World Wide Tour.
They brought originality and ramped up the sex appeal. The main element was a 1920's Parisian theme.
Corsets, head dresses, tuxedos and high detail pants were included in the show. The Girlie Tour was arguably the best costume design show Madonna put on.
The D&G line was created in 1994. This line is geared more to the younger set. It has a wild, unexpected feeling, with classic undertones. Any woman could wear these clothes, but there is just enough cutting edge for ladies over 35 to feel slightly out of place.
In 2000 the D&G brand established its own leather and footwear division, which began manufacturing prototypes of their designs. Their footwear became a reflection of the D and G brand, sexy and stylish.
Their heels represented sharp, clean lines with lots of edge appeal. Not quite over the top, but close to the edge of naughtiness.
Sadly, Domenico and Stefano broke off their relationship in 2005, after 25 years. They knew their personal lives were no longer meshing, but they could not end their professional lives.
D&G work well together. They feed off each other's creativity. The Dolce and Gabbana empire was launched with a mere $1,000 dollars, and rose to become one the world's most respected design houses. As long as they stay together producing fashion like nobody's business, the happier women will be.
