The One and Only Yves Saint Laurent

"Dressing is a way of life", a quote by Yves Saint Laurent. This is so true, and shoes are a must to complete the look. Mr. Laurent was born in Oran, Algeria. He attended the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture, where he studied fashion.

Understanding the need for great fashion for women, Laurent began to relate fashion to how woman responded to clothes. Always looking for the "WOW" moment, this is how Yves expressed himself in his clothing.

In 1953 he won a contest from The International Wool Secretariat for Young Designers.

This inspired Michel de Brunhoff, French Vogue editor at the time, to encourage him to become a designer.

After beating Fernando Sanchez and Karl Lagerfield for the young designer of the year, Christian Dior was introduced to Yves and hired him on the spot.

In 1957 Christian Dior appointed Saint Laurent as his successor. Once YSL was managing The House of Dior, Christian Dior passed away.

It was if Dior knew what was going to happen and put the best man in play. At the young age of 21, YSL was designing and creating clothes equal to Dior's vision, but enhanced with YSL flavor.

YSL clothes became a predominant feature in fashion. Known for his extreme tailoring and fit, women flocked to attend his runways, and wear his clothes.

Fired from the House of Dior in 1962, Yves Saint Laurent started his own line. Realizing that this is what he always wanted, he began to break the traditional designer standards.

Always one to be innovative, YSL became the first designer to use ethic models on his runway. His muses were Iman and Catherine Deneuve.

In 1983 he became the first fashion designer honored by the Metropolitan Museum of Art with a solo exhibition.

His clothes reflected timeless, ageless beauty. The craftsmanship and detail were exceptional.

In 1993 YSL sold his design house to a pharmaceutical company for over 60 million dollars, prior to the Gucci Group acquiring the brand.

YSL was awarded the Bank of Commander Legion d'Honneur Award in 2001.

This is one of the highest honors given in Europe. Retiring in 2002, Yves Saint Laurent will always be one of the top fashion designers in the world. Providing beauty for women is one of the things he did so very well.
